What are sustainable products?
The concept “sustainability” is on the agenda.
Wherever you go, it's easy to find a label saying “100% sustainable brand” or “sustainable products”. But actually what does it mean? What is a sustainable product?
We understand that it is difficult to know. Today, we are going to deconstruct this concept, starting with the word sustainability. In the literal sense, “sustainability” refers to the capacity of a system to sustain, remain, conserve and resist change.
Sustainability can be subdivided into three types: economic, social and environmental.
Economic sustainability promotes a responsible and rational use of financial resources. The social one aims to guarantee full access to citizenship. And environmental sustainability, which we often hear about, comprises the conservation and responsible use of natural and environmental resources, regardless of the purpose, whether it to be for individual or industrial use.
Thereupon, sustainability is the ability a company has to respond to the needs of current generations without compromising the needs of future generations, ensuring a balance between the economic, environmental and social pillars.
But why should you care about sustainability?
We think it's easy to comprehend that sustainability is good for everyone. In the sense that:
- It increases the quality of life by taking care of the quality of the air and water consumed;
- Contributes to the preservation of biodiversity by respecting natural resources and ecosystems;
- It reduces environmental disasters and improves the economy, because it promotes eco-efficient practices;
- Promotes greater and better production of services and products by committing companies to a sustainable future.
But in practice, when is a product sustainable?

The basis for a product to be considered sustainable is based on the rationed, balanced and optimized use of the resources we have, without compromising the normal functioning of the ecosystem, that is, using production based on clean processes. Not only the production must follow these standards, but also the packaging. Only then, production has the least possible impact on the environment.
But it is not just production that matters for a product to be considered sustainable, respect for the workers involved in the entire manufacturing process must also be guaranteed, whether at a social or economic level.
Another characteristic that we must take into account is the product life cycle, that is, if the purpose for which the product is intended is effectively achieved, if it is of good quality and if it is durable. This in order to maximize the reduction of the carbon footprint and minimize the waste of available resources.
Briefly, the main characteristics to be taken into account to define a product as sustainable are the materials used for production, the production method, the assessment of the product's life cycle and the impact at a socio-economic level.
